What is PVA powder used for?

PVA is a thermoplastic synthetic polymer that, unlike many other synthetic polymers, is made by hydrolysis of poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc). PVA's applications have grown in the previous decade as a result of its unique qualities, which include strong mechanical properties, chemical and thermal stability, non-toxicity, film-forming capabilities, and inexpensive manufacturing costs.

PVA is used in a variety of industries, including textiles, paper, and food packaging, as well as biodegradable products such as backing rolls, adhesives, coatings, and surfactants. Aside from technical uses, PVA, like other synthetic polymers, has applications in medicine and biology and has become one of the primary focuses of polymer researchers.

PVA can be dissolved in hot or cold water. Tap water is a preferred solvent in making PVA solutions as bacterial mitigation may form in distilled water.

A solution would typically be prepared as follows:

Slowly stir in a specific amount of polyvinyl alcohol powder into a known volume of cold water. Do not add the powder rapidly as it may clump and form a sticky mass as temperature rises.

When the powder is fully dispersed, heat the mixture to a temperature of 90 °C to 100 °C at which the polymer becomes solubilized.

Continue mixing until the PVA is entirely solubilized and emulsified. The grade of material and efficiency of agitation can affect the rate of solubilization and emulsification.

PVA polymer powder is especially suitable for use as a building mortar additive. It can be used in conjunction with methyl cellulose ether water retention agents to improve the flexibility, water retention and cement mortar adhesion. In addition, it can also reduce the friction of the mortar, thereby enhancing the work energy and quality (to prevent cracking, shedding, increasing adhesion strength and sliding). PVA is a small granular polymer, easy to disperse in cold water, can be rapidly dispersed in water, the viscosity of its aqueous solution is good, which can improve many characteristics.

The polyvinyl alcohol powder and other powdered ingredients are fully dispersed through dry mixing and then dissolved with water. At this time, PVA can dissolve without condensing.
